Located in historic downtown St. Paul, Minnesota and cognizant of Minnesota’s French origins, Salon du Nord takes its name from an amalgam of Minnesota’s own motto: L’ Etoile du Nord (the Star of the North) and the famous French exhibition. And, in keeping with the Scandinavian heritage of Minnesota’s earliest pioneers, we have a strong interest in and focus upon Scandinavian Art. But, like the Minnesota of today, Salon du Nord’s collection is far broader than its Nordic concentration. We offer original artwork from all over the world, and feature artists whose works we find worth the effort to view. We also endeavor to include new artists whose talent has them emerging from the Twin Cities’ thriving art community.

Our goal at Salon du Nord is to excel in helping our customers discover and appreciate original fine art. We do this through exhibitions that transcend mere offer and display. We hope to educate by telling the artist’s story and showing the artist’s world, and thereby develop the viewer’s appreciation of the piece based on the artist’s mindset at the time of conception. We also desire to foster that appreciation by assisting in the creation of the aesthetic synthesis essential to the display of art. That synthesis consists of one part artist’s vision; one part customer’s philosophy; and one part the surrounding decor. To assist us in making this synthesis a sum that is greater than its individual parts, we have relationships with framers, interior decorators, graphic artists, and even contractors. Simply put, we want our customers to savor the artwork they purchase as they might a fine wine with a grand meal.

Generally, Salon du Nord offers only original paintings or drawings (though occasionally we may offer etchings of artists we regularly feature) be they acrylic, chalk, crayon, dry point, oil, pastel, pencil, or watercolor. Our philosophy is that unique artwork develops that truly unique relationship between the artist (sometimes long dead) and the living owner that is more intimate than can imparted by impersonal museum viewing or ownership of reproductions which often lack the depth or other nuances intended by the artist.

As no galley can offer all the fine art in the world, we will be pleased to assist potential customers in their search for the right piece.
