THE FINE PRINT

We want you to understand what you are buying and have confidence in your decision. Every customer has 14 calendar days to verify your purchase under the terms below.
Please read our terms as they apply to the artwork offered here. Generally, each piece is guaranteed to be original unless clearly stated otherwise. We do not sell reproductions, canvas copies of museum works, or expensive prints known as "giclees." If you have any questions concerning a piece of artwork, please contact us and we will answer you quickly. Again, you should understand what you are buying before you buy.

If we name the artist without limitation, we are guaranteeing authenticity. That means the artwork was executed by the named artist. Should you send us a letter from a recognized expert on the artist, stating legitimate reasons why your piece has been determined not authentic, we will refund your purchase, less shipping costs and provided that the piece (or its frame) has not been modified by you in any way. Verified correspondence (including e-mail) from such experts are acceptable if they provide contact information and actual contact can be made. We will accept letters and e-mails from many types of experts, including curators, authors of catalogues raissone, authenticators of artists' estates, and curators of known exhibitions.

However, letters from the artist's family, friends, or neighbors do not meet the expert criterion. Nor do opinions of gallery owners or regional auction houses (unless they are a recognized authority on the artist). These sources, though they may mean well and are acting in good faith, are often incorrect. Likewise, we dissuade buyers from self-appointed so-called "authenticators." Such persons are often a waste of time and resources. Their opinions will not meet the expert criterion required for a refund.

If we name the artist with the limitation "attributed to" it is guaranteed to be executed in the era stated, and in our opinion was likely executed by the artist, but we are not confident enough to guarantee authenticity. This is often the case with artwork that lacks provenance or other indicia of authenticity. Numerous pieces of art are sold as attributions every day.

If an artist is named with any of the limitations: "style of," "manner of," "school of" or follower of," it means that the piece resembles the work of the artist named, but was probably not executed by the named artist's hand.

Should a painting be guaranteed to be an "antique," it is more than 75-years old.

We will advise if a piece has recently been cleaned and restored. If possible, information regarding the cleaning and/or restoration will be provided to you upon sale.

We DO NOT guarantee frames, the quality of mounting, or the caliber of matting, unless we so state in our offering or have a written agreement with you so stating. Many pieces we have obtained are in frames, which have seen better days. Such frames are often made of old wood and/or fragile gesso (old plaster), and are easily damaged. Some watercolors have been matted and mounted without regard to the possibility of acid-burn. We strongly recommend that you have your pieces museum-mounted and can refer you to framers to do so. If a piece has been recently framed, or is properly mounted, we will so advise.

Many artists reserve the right to duplicate the images portrayed in their individual artwork. Unless you have a written agreement from the artist transferring such rights to you, any duplication of those images is at your own risk. Violation of an artist’s copyright can result in substantial damages, including attorney fees and civil penalties, under federal or international law. Criminal prosecution may also follow. We make no claim that you are purchasing anything other than the artwork itself and express no opinion as to the propriety or legality of any duplication by you or others.
